“I have learned a lot from the professors and friends at Sookmyung Women’s University. I was able to get used to my time studying in Korea thanks to the help of many teachers. Also, I am very thankful that they made me feel as if I were developing as the days went by.”

Nguyen Kim Han, majoring in economics at Sookmyung, is from the state of Qui Nhon, Vietnam which has set up a sisterhood relationship with Yongsan-gu. She made it through a fierce competition and earned the scholarship to Sookmyung. She said that she watched a lot of K-drama and listened to K-POP, all the while dreaming of a life studying abroad in Korea. Now, she has been studying in Korea for a year and a half. Nguyen confessed that at first, she was weary of the strangeness around her. However, thanks to Sookmyung, and the support Yongsan-gu has given her, she was able to blend in faster than the other international students.

Our university has been running the Yang Chun Yeol Global Scholarship from 2016 to support outstanding foreign students like Nguyen. The scholarship was founded by Hwang Jemma alumni (Home Economic ’59 graduate) by the donation of her private properties. Every year, it supports students from developing countries who attend regular semesters, with the interest from the fund which is around thirteen billion won.

For the last two years, 46 foreign students have received this scholarship, and there are many different ways to get qualified for it. The Foreign Language Proficient Expert Fund is a scholarship for students who are Korean language experts with the TOPIK level of five or above and for students who have received high scores from various English proficiency tests. Also, students who have been recommended from Asia, Africa, and South America’s partner institutes and agency agreements can receive The Agency Agreement Recommendation Fund which supports the International Dormitory fee for six months to one year. In addition, The Sookmyung Foreign Students Publicity Ambassador Fund is awarded to students who participate in publicity activities to promote the program to other foreign students.

Sookmyung Women’s University plans to support international students from third world countries with opportunities of education and nurture them to become global female leaders. In fact, it turned out that a Kenyan alumni Mango Jane Angar (Political Science and International Relations ’18 graduate) who received the Dean Award from the College of Social Sciences in Febuary, also received the Yang Chun Yeol Global Scholarship. Mango hopes to attend graduate school to study Korea’s political and economic developments to make contributions to her country.

The International Cooperation Team stated, “Yang Chun Yeol Global Scholarship contains the wish of Hwang Jemma alumni for excellent foreign students to study in a comfortable environment and become pro-Korean global leaders. We will support not only the scholarship but also operate Korean clinics and various foreign student supporting programs to reinforce Sookmyung global experts to broaden their influence all over the world.”
