A road is to be named after Princess Consort Sunheon to honor her accomplishments in advancing the education of modern women through the foundation of Sookmyung.

With the cooperation from Yongsan District, our university announced that the 630m Cheongpa-ro 47-gil road from the intersection of Sookmyung Women’s University entrance to the three-way intersection of Hyochang Park will be named as Sunheonhwanggwibi-gil.

The naming of the honorary road has been promoted in celebration of our school’s 112th foundation anniversary to once again remind Princess Consort Sunheon’s love for our country and people and to inspire pride in our members.  The name of the honorary road was determined through consultation with Yongsan District and it was publicly announced after a review by the Road Name Address Committee. The name of the honorary road is to be used until 2023.

The Mayor of Yongsan District, Seong Jang-hyeon, announced, “I hope the naming of the honorary road that has been promoted as a part of the project to raise awareness on the history of Yongsan District can become an opportunity to shed light on the spirit of Princess Consort Sunheon who pioneered the modern education for women.”

Princess Consort Sunheon was a royal concubine of Emperor Gojong during the age of the Korean Empire and she was also the mother of King Youngchin (Lee Eun). Having an early interest in women’s education, she founded Educational Foundation Yangjeonguisuk, Jinmyeong Girl's School, and our university’s forerunner Myungshin Girl's School.

Since then, Sookmyung Women's Junior College was founded in Cheongpa-dong, Yongsan District in 1983 stemming from Myungshin Girl's School and the college was elevated to a university as Sookmyung Women’s University in 1955. Since the establishment, our university has produced more than 110,000 outstanding individuals and became a representative institution of women’s higher education in Korea. Recently, there also have been close collaboration with the local community centered on Yongsan District.

On the other hand, Sunheonhwanggwibi-gil is the fourth honorary road named in Yongsan District. Yongsan District has previously named “Yoogwansun-gil (Noksapyeong-daero 40da gil)” in 2015, Namijanggun-ro (Hyochangwon-ro),” and Vietnam Quy Nhon-gil (Bogwang-ro 59-gil)” in 2016.

President Jungai Kang said, “The effort of Princess Consort Sunheon toward new education for women by donating the assets and privy purse of the imperial family led to the valuable fruition of establishing the cradle of outstanding women individuals who will lead the nation,” and “We will hold a celebratory event related to the naming of the honorary road in April to create an opportunity for meaningful sharing with the members and local community.”
