On October 12, our university announced the opening of the base center for the Campus Town project that is jointly being promoted with Seoul City and Yongsan District in hopes to revitalize the community, resolve youth-related issues, among other issues.

The base center of “the Sookmyung CROSS Campus” that nestled in the basement of the Najin Electronics World Building in Yongsan District is a space for diverse collaborative activities such as resolution of current community issues through industry-academy-government collaboration model that links corporations and institutions and the Capstone Design Project in addition to the development of industry-linked joint technologies through university research labs and research centers. The total of 734 space houses a research lab for professors dedicated to industry-university cooperation, research center residence, 3D Prototype LAB, seminar rooms, lecture rooms, Open Space (space for entrepreneurship training), and more.

Our university is hoping this space will become a place of exchanging university and relevant organization-related information through the implementation of detail programs of the Campus Town project. The students participating in the Campus Town project can also be productive based on technical guidance, prototype production, venture-related management consulting, and investment attracting activities.

In particular, as the 3D Prototype LAB is installed with precision plastic 3D printer (Projet 3600 MAX, priced around 110 million won), color 3D printer (Projet 660Pro, priced around 76 million won), and is to be installed metal processing 3D printer (priced around 500 million ~ 1 billion won) in the near future, the lab enables production of advanced prototypes. We are also expecting contributions to the local community through the operation of 3D printing curriculum.

The CROSS Campus will also house our university’s outstanding research centers such as the Creative Convergence Design Research Center, Big Data Using Research Center, and Center for Arts and Cultural Management. By housing research centers that can implement industrial partnership such as design and engineering, we can lead joint researches with regional corporations, resolution of bottleneck techniques, etc., and based on the promotion of partnership projects with relevant institutions, we can expect new synergies.

In addition, there are plans to expand projects that link with relevant institutions nearby. The aim is to provide support on incubating and accelerating entrepreneurship for startup teams and competition winning teams that move in to the Open Space by establishing a collaborative system with the KIAT Techno Humanities Convergence Atelier operated by the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology, Seoul City’s Digital Black Smith Shop and Global Startup Center, and Infinite Creative Space that has the largest educational 3D printer in Korea.

Meanwhile, our university plans to promote the top goals of the Campus Town project based on the CROSS Campus such as commercial revitalization of the Yongmun Traditional Market, revitalization young entrepreneurs, and formation of Yongsan cultural belt. In fact, as a part of the above plans, our university is already promoting or planning the following activities this year: “Value Up, Join Up! Student Competition” for commercial revitalization of the Yongmun Traditional Market; “Fresh Merchants”; “Power of Home Cooking”; “Campus Town Startup Competition” for discovering creative CEOs; “Campus Town Business Model (Program) Development and Operation Competition” for operation of business model, curricular, and extracurricular programs; “Professor-Merchant Association Meeting” for conducting smooth business; etc.
