Sookmyung is teaming up with Google for Education and donating 200 old laptops to a school in Mongolia.

On Fri, Sep. 22, the Innovation Organization held the “Sookmyung Women’s University - Google for Education” conference at the school’s administration building and discussed global ESG fulfillment strategies. The members of this day’s meeting included President Jang Yoon-geum, Vice President Park Jong-sung, Google for Education’s JAPAC (Asia-Pacific region) Director, Colin Marson, and Google’s Head of Korea, Sophy Bae.

Sookmyung Women's University decided to install ChromeOS Flex on 200 laptops lent to undergraduate students and donate them to Mongolia’s Ministry of Education and Science. By converting the system of existing devices to the cloud-based ChromeOS Flex, the laptops’ battery life will be prolonged and their performance will be enhanced, providing a more efficient learning environment for students. Furthermore, the conversion improves sustainability from an ESG perspective, as no electronic waste is produced during the process.

Google for Education will be responsible for general contribution tasks, including the support of installing ChromeOS Flex, communicating with the Mongolian Ministry of Education and Science, and delivering the laptops. It is the first time the group has initiated a global ESG operation with a Korean university.

Both sides, starting with this donation, have shown their will to cooperate actively on global ESG activities based on education. The two also shared their views on implementing various programs, such as overseas volunteer work, talent contribution programs for Mongolian students, and global leader-fostering plans.

Vice President Park Jong-sung (Head of the University Innovation Organization) stated, “This collaboration is meaningful in that we can achieve global ESG values by supporting devices for the digital conversion of Mongolian schools and fulfilling social values, the indispensable strategy of our University Innovation Organization.” He added, “Our work with Google for Education will become a chance for us to fulfill our social duties as a university and utilize various resources within the school to focus on ESG fulfillment and innovation.”

Google for Edcuation’s JAPAC Director, Colin Marson, said, “I am overjoyed to join Sookmyung Women’s University’s ESG project with Google ChromOS Flex, a system we initiated to recycle old devices and protect the environment. I hope this collaboration will be a gateway for universities to start utilizing ChormeOS, the safest and easily-manageable system.”

Google for Education innovates the way of learning with its eco-friendly tool, Google Workspace for Education, along with ChromeOS devices, maximizing the potential of students and teachers. The collaboration with Google for Education is one of Sookmyung’s many activities for sustainable growth. ESG activities is one of the three innovation goals of the university.
