“Which major is the one for me?” Discovering the path at Sookmyung Open Campus

The Sookmyung Open Campus that is conducted as a part of High School Education Optimization University Support Project by the Ministry of Education was prepared to provide information that gives practical help toward selection of college and major as well as entrance exam for middle school and high school students through special lectures on majors and cover letter given by professors. On this day, a total of 1,300 male and female middle school and high school students participated in the event.
At this year’s Open Campus, the major experiential event where the participants can experience college classes was held for the first time. Female high school students who applied in advance were able to get a taste of how college lectures are conducted by taking actual classes during this semester with college students from 5 different majors, which included Application Physics, Chinese Language & Literature, French Language & Culture, and Family Resource Management. For example, some of the classes included “lessons on French pronunciation and chanson” for the Department of French Language & Culture, “application of psychology theory and analysis of newspaper article” for the Department of Social Psychology, and “lesson on the working principle of gravity through experiments” for Application Physics.
In addition, professors from a total of 21 majors gave special lectures on each major’s vision, curriculum, and future career for the students in the Myungshin Building, Queen Sunheon Building, and Veritas Building. In particular, special lecture on College of Engineering that is being newly established and expanded starting 2017 academic year in accordance with the PRIME Project (Program for Industrial Needs-Matched Education) was held for the first time and gained a lot of attention from the students. In addition, students from a total of 35 majors introduced their majors as well as career paths and acceptance know-how to students one-on-one through the counseling booths installed in the square in front of the Queen Sunheon Building.
On the other hand, the Admission Team prepared a special lecture on how to write cover letters for school transcript and college admission, which gave the high school students an opportunity to personally ask questions and quench their curiosity. Officials of the Admission Team said, “The 2016 Sookmyung Open Campus was focused on relieving some of the burden of high school students who are worrying about their career paths and college admission.” and “We believe this was a meaningful time for the students to take interest in their career paths especially through the special lectures on the newly established College of Engineering and various events for experiencing different majors.”
