Christy Clark is the current 36th Premier of the BC Liberal Party in Canada and has been a role model of women leadership by being active as an educationist and journalist as well as a politician. She began her career as a politician with her election as a Member of Legislature at the age of 31 in 1996. Since then, she has been leading autonomous education environment and sound development of policies by serving consecutive terms as the Minister of Education, Vice-Premier, and Minister of Children and Family Development.

Premier Clark has emphasized the importance of compatibility between work and home for women. She once temporarily left behind the political world to look after her child’s education. However, even during this period, she maintained high popularity as a political commentator and journalist by being active on TV and radio such as hosting the Christy Clark Show. As a result, she returned to the political arena in 2011 and was elected as the BC Premier, and through the re-election in 2013, she became the longest serving female Premier in the history of Canada.

She once became a hot topic by commuting to work with her child during her tenure and emerged as a role model of successful working moms. In addition, with a mother’s heart, she conducted the “Pink Shirt Campaign” in order to rid of violence in BC and raise awareness of policies on bullying at work, society, and schools. Up to now, Premier Clark had won the YMCA Women of Distinction Award, 2009 Consumer’s Choice Award, and 2009 Woman of the Year in BC.

With the recognition of such achievements, our university decided to award Premier Clark with an honorary doctorate in political science. The officials at the graduate school announced the reason behind the award. “Through gentle women’s leadership in various areas such as media, she greatly contributed to the development of Canada’s politics, economy, and education. And with successful balance between work and home, she has become a role model for working moms.”

Meanwhile, after the award ceremony, our university and Royal Roads University in BC signed an agreement for joint research and student exchange, as well as, an agreement for student internship program with the Trade and Invest BC representatives. Our university plans to continue to build an omnidirectional cooperative relationship with the BC state government in the future.
