On October 21(Fri), our university held an exchange exhibition with Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Versailles at the Moon Gallery of Moon Shin Museum on campus.

This exhibition was prepared in celebration of diplomatic relations between Korea and France amidst wide range of active private exchanges such as politics, economy, society, and culture in order to take a closer look at the works of students from the representative art schools of both countries in one place and to share new trends in the world of art. Accordingly, 12 students from Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Versailles and 29 students from Sookmyung University’s Department of Painting participated and exhibited around 50 artworks.

As the title of the exhibition “Closer with Empathy” suggests, the exhibition was meant to be more than simple introduction of works, but an expression of individuality of the up-and-coming artists of each country through various methods. It is very inspirational from the sense that the exhibition served as an opportunity to stimulate and share artistic creativity of Korean and French cultures through “empathy” and mutual understanding. Through this event, the two universities are to solidify the vision toward a new future collaboration as cultural companions.

Based on formative arts, Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Versailles boasts high standard faculty in areas such as painting, sculpture, installation, print, computer graphics, video, drawing, art history, and integrated art, and it is a university with more than 200 years of art education history and tradition. In addition, by being an international art school that implements art education established on practice and theory based on integrated art education, it is producing promising artists all over the world. It also has active exchanges with Korean international students such as through a print artist residing in France, Kim Myeong-nam, who is currently a professor and the dean of the department of print art.

Professor Kwon Hee-yeon of our university’s Department of Painting said, “This exchange exhibition is special in the sense that it was created based on voluntary participation by the students as a part of Global Explorer prior to being an exchange between two schools,” and “it will be a good opportunity to gather every participating artists in one place and broaden artistic sense and perspective.”
