Our University’s President Jungai Kang visited local institutions in Viet Nam for 4 days from November 4 to 7 and discussed diverse educational cooperation projects. This trip was made possible as our university was invited as the representative educational institution of Yongsan District for the 20th anniversary event celebrating the exchange between Yongsan District and Qui Nhon City in Viet Nam.

Qui Nhon City is a place where Korea’s White Tiger Corps was stationed during the Viet Nam War and a location of the most ferocious battlefield, so the region was not such an amicable place for Korea. However, since the start of friendly exchanges in 1996, the relationship recovered through great efforts such as support of ophthalmology and dental equipment and volunteer services.

Our university entered into an MOU with Yongsan District in 2011 and has been supporting scholarships and language study abroad expenses at the International Institute of Language Education, among others, for Vietnamese exchange students from the Qui Nhon City each year. There have been a total of 6 recipients up to date and our university also received an appreciation plaque from the Qui Nhon City.

Through this visit, while participating in the celebratory event related to the 20th anniversary of Yongsan - Qui Nhon exchange, President Kang promoted diverse methods of cooperation between our university and institutions in Viet Nam. By visiting the Sejong Korean Language Center that recently opened in Qui Nhon City, she was able to discuss about the enthusiasm of Korean language in Viet Nam and the short/long-term educational support programs concerning Korean language education by our university’s students. She also visited the prestigious university in Viet Nam, AJC·Academy of Journalism and Communication, and discussed about collaboration in graduate exchange programs.

In addition, President Kang gave a special lecture with the topic “The Heart of Future Value, Global Sookmyung” at the Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted, one of the top 10 prestigious high schools in Viet Nam, and our university’s cheerleading team NiViS captured the eyes of the local students through their colorful performance and were able to spread the name and pride of Sookmyung. President Kang safely returned home after completing her crammed schedule for 4 days which also included a parent meeting with Viet Nam exchange student parents, discussion on establishing a Sookmyung alumni association in Viet Nam, among others.

Based on such efforts, our university plans to actively expand the educational projects with Viet Nam that has national population reaching almost 93 million as well as actively supporting the advancement of our students. President Jungai Kang said, “Viet Nam is the 4th largest export market in Korea and a country with the highest development potential,” and “we will raise the value of Global Sookmyung through various support and collaborative projects with Yongsan District.”
