Sookmyung’s Newest family member; The College of Engineering

Let’s suppose you are about to welcome a new member into your family. How would you feel? You’d probably speculate on the new member’s face, gestures, sounds, and even the look of her/his hands and feet. This semester Sookmyungians will also be welcoming to the campus a new family member as well. It is the recently founded College of Engineering, which will encompass the Department of Information Technology Engineering and the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.

The College of Engineering at Sookmyung Women’s University was founded at the onset of 2016.There were four main objectives for establishing the College of Engineering at Sookmyung Women’s University. First, the university wants to train talented persons who have humanistic knowledge as well as natural science knowledge. Second, Sookmyung Women’s University hope to nurture engineering students who have strong English skills and one other foreign language in order to realize the globalization of engineering in Korea. Third, the university wants to foster women engineering leaders who can keep pace with globalization in the future, and finally, Sookmyung Women’s University hopes its graduates will do cutting edge research that will be admired worldwide.

According to Lee Siu, Provost of the College of engineering, “Although we are sure to encounter plenty of challenges as it’s a first at Sookmyung Women’s University, I am confident Sookmyung Women’s University will gain recognition as a very developed college of engineering in the future.”  The College is composed of two separate departments: the Department of Information Technology Engineering and the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, and approximately 100 students have enrolled in the College. Lee Gyuwon, Department of Information Technology Engineering ’16, said, “Though I feel the need to satisfy everyone’s expectations of greatness from students enrolled in the College of Engineering, I believe I will benefit greatly from being among the first students to be admitted to the College at Sookmyung Women’s University and that establishment of the College at Sookmyung Women’s University will help reduce discrimination between men and women in Korea.”  Classes in the College of Engineering started on March 2nd.
