The Asia Pacific Women's Information Network Center, consults UNESCO UNITWIN project with Cambodian

The purpose of UNESCO UNITWIN project is to strengthen the competence of higher education institutions by creating networks among higher education institutions around the world and through exchanges such as knowledge and research sharing. The Asia Pacific Women's Information Network Center, which was appointed as the “Implementation Institution of UNESCO Chair in Women’s Communication Skill” in 1998, is currently managing this project with the support from the Ministry of Education.

Through this visit, the Executive Director of The Asia Pacific Women's Information Network Center Kim Myong-hee had a discussion with the Cambodian Vice-minister of Education Kim Sethany and Indonesian Vice-minister of Education Harris Iskandar as well as high government officials from the two countries. At the meeting with the Korean Ambassador to Cambodia Kim Won-jin and officials of our public institutions, the importance of women empowerment that is being emphasized in government policy decisions in each country was reconfirmed, and there was also an agreement to actively cooperate for the implementation of “Women Empowerment through ICT and Leadership Education,” which is the theme of this UNESCO UNITWIN project.

In addition, the local government officials agreed to search for various ways toward joint workshops and educational programs through establishment of cooperative network with Korea in order to broaden the scope of women empowerment. In particular, Cambodian Vice-minister of Education Kim Sethany agreed on cooperation on the government level and Indonesian Assistant Minister of Higher Education Nada Marsudi proposed not only cooperation between universities but also comprehensive cooperation and support between governments.

The UNITWIN project was planned based on MOU agreement between 3 countries (Indonesia, Cambodia, and Thailand), and for the first year, the project is planned to be conducted for Universitas Pelita Harapan in Indonesia and Life University in Cambodia. Through the exchange and cooperation in this network, ICT and leadership competence education is to be conducted to local women and higher education institutions.

Currently, in April 2016, joint research by researchers from each country under the leadership of a Korean researcher is being conducted on ICT and leadership to identify the status and demands in the cooperating countries. Based on the results of this research, customized programs and contents that reflect the demands of each country are to be developed. In addition, based on the developed programs and contents, teaching staff and students of Sookmyung University is to form a team and conduct education on ICT and leadership to the local students. The visit is planned from August 1 to 5 in Cambodia and August 15 to 19 in Indonesia. The week-long education program is expected to create active exchange between the universities.
