The visiting team consisted of our university’s officials, multicultural-related institutions of local governments, media, and others, which included the Director of Sookmyung Institute for Multicultural Studies Yun Gwang-il, Former Director of Amnesty International Korea Jeon Gyeong-ok (Professor of Department of Political Diplomacy), and President of Korean Association for Multicultural Studies Lee Gi-beom (Professor of Department of Education).

Through this visit, Sookmyung Institute for Multicultural Studies observed and discussed measures against the current conditions and issues of children and youths with immigrant backgrounds that are emerging as challenges in the Japanese multicultural society with the participating institutional officials. Although it is difficult to directly compare Korea and Japan due to differences in immigrant history, nature of immigration, and policies, but it was an opportunity to look back on Korean multicultural policies through the realistic issues and practical measures of Japan.

In this coming June, Japanese officials are planning to visit Ansan and Seoul to conduct field inquiry focused on multicultural families and youth education in order to have more in-depth discussions. In addition, there are plans to hold a symposium in October in order to create a Korea-Japan network for researchers and activists of multicultural child and youths and to prepare a foundation for continuous research and measures on future generations in the multicultural society.
