The people you meet in society determine your life path. There is plenty of evidence that a good mentor is a valuable asset in life, especially for teenagers who are full of curiosity and energy.  Meeting a good mentor could mean finding direction in their life. This winter vacation, Sookmyung Women’s University students became mentors for teenaged students from elementary, middle, and high school. For four days, Sookmyung students executed their planned programs and taught students using their ability and leadership skills.

This winter vacation from January to February of 2016, about 70 Sookmyung Women’s University students were divided into 8 groups and participated in the Knowledge Work Camp, hosted by the Korea Student Aid Foundation’s Ministry of Donation and Business of Education. The Ministry is the foundation’s business department responsible for cultivating human resources. The Social Service Team at Sookmyung Women’s University applied to participate. This Camp also aims at cultivating human resources. University students act as mentors and teach mentees who are elementary, middle, and high school students from low-income families over the vacation period. The Camp lasts four days. Mentors are responsible for planning and have autonomous control over all activities. Cho Jongsook, head of the Social Service Team, said, “This is a chance for mentors to nurture their creative leadership ability. It is also an opportunity for mentees to develop their own capabilities.” This year, the club, Seollem, also participated in the camp as one of the 8 groupings. During the camp, the club targeted elementary students and focused their teaching on the understanding musicals. Kong Daeun, Department of Japanese Studies ’13 and head of Seollem, said, “In the beginning we were worried. We wondered whether our subject matter would appeal to our mentees. However, our worries were groundless. The children responded actively and enthusiastically. If given the opportunity to participate in the camp again, I would.” The camp is scheduled to open again this summer vacation.
