On September 26 (Mon), our university entered into an MOU for the participation of Winter Olympics group volunteering services at the Seoul office of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and Pyeongchang Winter Olympics Organizing Committee. The agreement ceremony was participated by our university’s President Jungai Kang and Head of Organizing Committee Lee Hui-beom as well as President of Seoul National University of Science & Technology Kim Jong-ho and Vice-president of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Kim Yoo-gyeong, who are also participating in the MOU.

According to the MOU, our university and Pyeongchang Organizing Committee are to implement the following work toward the successful promotion of the Olympics: ▲ build social development power and social participation through volunteer services, ▲ cooperate on selection, education, allocation, etc., of volunteers, ▲ mutually and organically cooperate on promotional support, reward, etc., through media coverage, etc., and maintain cooperative partnership.

Among the volunteer services, our university plans to provide support in the areas of “ceremony, interpretation, and doping,” while Hankuk University of Foreign Studies is to provide support for “ceremony, support for athletes, and interpretation” and Seoul National University of Science & Technology for “information technology and competition.” Accordingly, there are plans to recruit and select a total of 100 volunteers for each area beginning in October.

Our university had participated as a 2013 Pyeongchang Winter Special Olympics Host Town University and provided home stay support to help foreign athletes on local adaptation and conducted Korean cultural experience programs. In addition, besides leadership groups such as Sookmyung Interpretation Team and Sookmyung Ambassador, there are many students who have rich experience in volunteer work such as from Division of Pharmacy, Department of Life Systems, and Department of Physical Education.

The officials of the Social Services in charge of providing support said, “We hope many students who wish to demonstrate Sookmyung leadership and spend a meaningful time can actively participate to achieve successful hosting of this national event.”
