On May 17th, Sookmyung Women’s University held its 50th anniversary homecoming event, a meaningful milestone where former graduate students had the opportunity to meet their old friends once again.

The university’s Department of Development & Cooperation commenced the homecoming event at the Snowflake Square Hall, and the event included programs where alumni who have honored the school long since their graduation could commemorate and celebrate their memories of the university. The university’s dean, Jang Yoon-keum, expressed appreciation and shared her vision for the university’s development.

The homecoming event was held for those who graduated between 1970 and 1973 after a four-year hiatus due to COVID-19. Over 200 alumni visited the campus, including those who flew in from places abroad like the US and Japan. Graduates smiled as they met their colleagues and recalled memories with their old friends as if they had gone back in time. Before the official event took place, graduates took individual pictures in their graduation caps and gowns.

Jo Jeong-hee (Economics, Class of 1970), who flew in from Washington DC, met Ha Soo-young, his old roommate after 20 years. Everything had changed, including the school they attended together and the house they used to live in, but their conversations were full of laughter and joy. “Coming back to school after 50 years, everything has changed so much,” he said, as he recalled his time there.

The opening speech by President Jang Yoon-keum, and the congratulatory speech by alumni president Kim Kyeong-hee took place following the commencement by host Lee Ik-sun (Child Welfare, Class of 1991).

President Jang noted that she was, “immensely happy to be able to hold this homecoming day event, which has been postponed for a long time due to the pandemic, especially now that not only the graduate colleagues but all of the seniors and juniors are present, making it more heartwarming and filled with love.”

Graduate representative Ryu Ji-yeong (Art, Class of 1972, 27th Student President) said, “Coming back to school makes me smile because just being here brings back the memories,” and that she hopes, “this moment becomes another opportunity for another great memory in the graduates’ lives.”

Congratulatory performances were also prepared by the students, which included the Nivis cheering squad and an “Opera talk concert.” A campus tour was also organized for the final section of the event. The university’s Department of Development and Cooperation plans to continue running various programs to help strengthen the network among alumni, including through this homecoming event.
