Sookmyung Women’s University has embarked on training specialists in information security with Microsoft, the global IT giant. The Career Center of the school hosted the “Information Security Professional Development Program with Microsoft 2023” at the Prime Complex from Mon, Jun. 26 to Fri, Jun. 30. As the importance of information security has become significant with the development of generative artificial intelligence including ChatGPT, deep learning, and cloud computing, the university designed the program to aid students in becoming experts in the areas. A total of 48 participants, 40 Sookmyung undergraduates studying IT-related majors and 8 local young talents participated. All application slots were filled on the day the announcement was made, showing its popularity. The participants gained experience making diverse security systems that companies can use through the 5-day training. They also acquired practical capabilities of task performance by learning to build, manage, and consult security systems with Azure, a cloud service of Microsoft.

The program is a fruit of persistent discussion led by Sookmyung with Microsoft, with the support of the career center business of the Ministry of Employment and Labor. The Career Center of Sookmyung Women’s University held “Career Mentoring Day” with Microsoft in March. It hosted the conference for the youth with Brad Smith, Microsoft vice chair and Lee Jung-sik, the Minister of Employment and Labor in April. Before the Ministry of Employment and Labor expanding the program to various universities in the country, Sookmyung has taken a successful first step. The training has been recognized for enhancing the job competency of female students in the field of information security, which has been gaining ever more popularity with the advent of ChatGPT.

Sung Jong-eun, Microsoft Philanthropies Lead of Korea, stated, “Microsoft supports the improvement of diversity in the field of digital-related jobs by collaborating with educational institutions, arranging global initiatives to close the gap created by future technologies, like information security and AI.” He added, “We are truly excited and looking forward to taking the very first step of conducting business with career centers at Sookmyung Women’s University.” Choi Cheol, the head of the center, explained, “This training will play a role as a stepping stone for our students to become specialists in the area of information security. We will keep developing programs that will help students enhance their competencies in the fields of their interests.”
