Sookmyung Reinforces, Exchanges with Saudi Arabia Princess Nora University

On her visit to the PNU on April 14-17, reviewed the progress of the existing ‘PNU-SMU Student Service Center Program and signed an MOU for PNU Art College and professor training programs. This will be the second collaborative project between the two schools.


The ‘PNU-SMU Student Service Center Program’ is a consulting project for building a tailored administrative service system at PNU, leveraging advanced architecture of SMU. A team of SMU staff visited PNU December and completed studying the current status of the system at the Saudi University. A one-stop service center with employment information services will be constructed on the Saudi campus. The SMU team is also planning to organize a leadership training program and invite students from PNU.

The recent visit, with the MOU on PNU College of Art, celebrates a heightened level of partnership between the two universities, deepening the consulting project to an undergraduate level. The partnership for the Art College started when PNU sought assistance from Sookmyung Art College for art education.


After an opening meeting with PNU President Huda on April 14 (Tuesday), the SMU delegation toured the PNU campus including a student service center, a hospital, a dental college. The tour continued through April 16 (Thursday). President Hwang delivered a special lecture at the central library on ‘Measures of Growth of Women’s Universities in the Era of Globalization’.

In the lecture, President Hwang spoke of Sookmyung Women’s University and its place in the Korean history, describing its revolutionary progress. She also painted an inspiring vision for women’s universities to continue to develop in the era of globalization. President Hwang further emphasized that with continuous cooperation, PNU and SMU will become two of the most influential universities of the world. Attended by 50 academic faculties and students, including President Huda, the lecture was received with enthusiastic applauses and profound questions.

Meanwhile, SMU International Cooperation Center participated in the International Education Exhibition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from April 15th to 17th. The team was able to seek opportunities for collaboration with many prestigious universities from across the world, including the Middle East. The Exhibition, organized by the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Higher Education, marks its sixth anniversary. It is a large scale international gathering, participated by approximately 450 universities including 10 from Korea.

At the exhibition, SMU started discussions on partnership and launch of Korean studies courses/researches with UBS (Canada), ESADE (Spain), University of Leeds (UK), and Syracuse University (USA). The SMU booth also enjoyed a steady stream of inquiries related admission, particularly in the areas of computer science, art, biology, etc. The number of student inquiries from the Middle East soared from the previous year. “Exchanges and partnership with PNU will be an opportunity for SMU to export education administrative services,” said ICC Director Seo Sookyung.-“Furthermore, this is an opportunity for us to build a new form of global partnership, taking full advantage of our competitive strength.”
