A New Year's Ceremony and New Year's Concert was held at the Centennial Hall of our university, the Samsung Convention Center, on January 5th. The New Year's Ceremony started with faculty and staff and student representatives sharing warm New Year's greetings, and Director Don hee Lee of Sookmyung Academy and President Sun hye Hwang made celebratory speeches of hope. President Hwang expressed thanks to members who worked together as one to reach excellent performance despite difficult conditions last year. Major accomplishments in the research field were mentioned, such as the performance of our university professors, the fact that the global exchange standard was improved through the introduction of an education and administration system in a foreign university, being the first women's university to successfully start an entrepreneur center, and winning a compensation lawsuit.

President Hwang said, "Our university will use the period of policy change through restructuring of the university to transform into a small but strong and flexible university," and presented five projects to pursue for this year -- establishing a university culture where members trust each other, completing reorganization into a future-oriented school system, re-attempts at government support projects, improvement of the education environment, and securing finances through development donations, etc. She also revealed the will to fulfill the role as a university that prepares for the age of peace and unification, as a university of the nation, in this 70th anniversary of the UN. President Hwang said, "As a step toward unification, we will establish subjects such as 'Understanding North Korea in Daily Life,' and have top expert groups teach the subjects. We will also pursue a '70 Songs of Peace Concert' at the DMZ."

Lastly, President Hwang revealed a resolution to train human resources who could be responsible for the future of our generation, at a point where we are experiencing great social change. She said, "Sookmyung members should not dream just for themselves, but have dreams they can share with the community," and emphasized, "Let's consider deep in our hearts what the responsibilities of Sookmyung members are during the next three to four year, which futurologists say  is a golden time."

After the New Year's Ceremony ended, the New Year's Concert was held for around one hour, just like last year. It featured Professor Woon sung Kim as the conductor and a performance by the Wind Orchestra. The first song was Gustav Holst's "March," and a total of eight fantastic songs were played. The highlight was  the first performance of "March of the Sookmyung", which was a reinterpretation of our school song. Professor Hee chul Chae, who hosted the concert, also appeared as a surprise performer for Ennio Morricone's "Gabriel's oboe".
