Artistic volunteer performance is one kind of 'Talent Donation' as a contribution to the society via one's talent. It is sort of volunteer work similar to educational or medical way of talent donation as practicians of arts visit people isolated from cultural life.

The performance took place twice in Seoul National University Hospital's cancer center lobby. It was an opportunity to appreciate Sookmyung Midam Dance Group's impressive and beautiful Korean traditional dance. Patients, families, and the members of the hospital were fascinated by the dance group's every action.

Sookmyung Midam Dance Group gave a sophisticated performance by preparing various themes as love song in pansori Chunhyangga, taepyungmu, salpuri dance, sanjo and Korean fan dance. Tradition and culture arts graduate school professor Yoon Sae hi was in charge of the choreograph.

Sookmyung Midam Dance Group means 'expressing beautiful stories(midam) by dancing'. It was founded in 2005 by our university professor Bae Sung-han, who used to be the leading dancer in the National Dance Company. Consisted of tradition and culture arts graduate school students, the dance group is acknowledged worldwide enough to win grand prix in international folklore contest held in Poland, in 2010.

This artistic volunteer performance was professor Bae's idea, also the head of social service department. Professor Bae said "I planned this performance to expand the area of volunteer work via Sookmyung Women's University's artistic competence. It is an opportunity to show our university's competence and satisfy social responsibility".

There were many performances before as a volunteer work. What makes Sookmyung Midam Dance Group's performance special is the completeness of differentiated program. Professor Bae emphasized "The performance will not be different from the professional dancers' performance as it is planned and participated by professors who studied traditional dance and have lots of experience, not performed an amateur level".

Sookmyung Midam Dance Group has been performing artistic volunteer performance since beginning of last December. The group performed in Song-pa Senior Welfare Service Center, Seocho Senior Welfare Service Center, Yeongdeungpo Senior Welfare Center for socially isolated people and senior citizens who live alone. Despite the bad weather, many audience came and were highly satisfied to ask encore performance.

Kim Chang-bae, head of the social service department, said "The performance was successful enough to be asked to perform again next year from the welfare organization“ and "We are now planning to have artistic volunteer performance regularly in every May and December and expanding the range of audience".
