In attendance at the inauguration were: Yong-teh Lee, the chairman of the Sookmyung School Foundation; Seung Lee, the chairman of Shin Il Educational Foundation; Kyungsook Lee, the former president of Sookmyung; Byungchul Kim, the president of Korea University; Inwon Cho, the president of Kyunghee University; John E. Endicott, the president of Woosong University; Jongwon Park, the president of Korea National University of Arts; along with other outside guests, alumni, and students. The number in attendance was around 1000.

The new president, Hwang, commented “I feel that being the 18th president of Sookmyung is a great honor as well as a heavy responsibility in this meaningful time during which we are to leap forward again.”

She then proceeded to express her determination to develop Sookmyung as a global female leadership university and proposed three visions for this.

First, Sookmyung will encourage its students to display their potential openly in an autonomous environment. In order to rise to the challenges of a rapidly changing educational environment, the voluntary participation and passion of Sookmyung’s members are required.

Second, Sookmyung will promote financial transparency and efficiency and do its best to secure funding by actively attracting female education funds from international organizations and by making the most of Sookmyung’s features. In harmony with these steps, Sookmyung will progress according to its motto, Sookmyung Global Best by expanding multilateral scholastic interchange with prestigious universities around the world in a way that is mutually beneficial. Sookmyung will also establish wi-fi and digital terminals campus-wide so that everyone on campus can access the same wealth of information at their fingertips.

Third, Sookmyung will build and secure exercise facilities and library annexes in several locations around the campus in order to make it not only an ideal place for study, but also a space for self-development where memories are made. Through these changes, Sookmyung will create a happy environment for its members, that by extension, will contribute to a just society and happy global world in turn.

At this inauguration, Byungchul Kim, the president of Korea University and Soonok Jeong, the president of the whole alumni association each gave a congratulatory address and welcome speech. After the inauguration, attendees moved to Hansangeun Lounge for a congratulatory reception.
