'The 10th Special Olympics World Winter Games PyeongChang' kicked off in Pyeongchang, Gangwon, on Jan. 29 with the opening ceremony. The winter sports festival for athletes with intellectual & developmental disabilities is participated by over 2800 athletes from 110 countries around the world. Our university joined in the celebration by conducting Pyeongchang Winter Special Olympics Host Town program for 31 Argentinean athletes for 3 nights and 4 days from Jan. 26 to 29.

The Host Town program which was co-organized with students, office of external affairs and Korean Cultural Institute provided dormitory accommodations, meals and transportation. The program also offered traditional cultural experience program to provide Korean cultural experience and help them adjust to the local environment.

For this event, 50 leadership group volunteer students of the university was formed and they used the knowledge from their majors to service the Argentinean team with interpretation, cultural activities, physical training and everyday tips.

Especially on the 27th, the Argentinean team visited Samsung Convention Center where they had a great time making Korean traditional masks and learning traditional mask dancing to Psy's song 'Gangnam Style'. The spokesman from the Korean Cultural Institute said, "This event was very meaningful because we were able to establish a bridgehead for the cultural exchange between Korean and Argentina.“

The student representative of Sookmyeong Cultural Ambassador, Yoon Seo-young (department of English language and literature, class 2010), shared her thoughts. "Although it was only a few days, I was able to really feel the meaning of happiness when I saw the innocent smiles on their faces. And like the Olympic slogan 'Together we can', I learned the power of unity that makes everything possible."
