Asia Pacific Women’s Information Network Center (APWINC) practices ICT and leadership education in universities in Laos-Cambodia

Sookmyung Women’s University’s APWINC has successfully finished on-site training in four universities in Laos and Cambodia during July and August. The on-site training was a part of the program, ‘2018 Sookmyung UNESCO-UNITWIN: strengthening female capacity through ICT and leadership training’.
The training team consisted of 14 professors from Sookmyung Women’s University and 40 students progressed the female leadership training along with ICT technology education. The training was held in the National University of Laos (located in Vientien) which is a network partner with UNITWIN, Souphanovong University of Laos (located in Luang Prabang), the Royal Pnompenh University of Cambodia (located in Pnompenh), Life University of Cambodia (located in Sihanoukville), during five days with a total of 340 local female university students and staffs.
The ICT training consisted of coding classes including scratch, processing, and AI chatbots. IoT classes using Arduino and photoshop/editing classes that handle premier images and film clips were proceeded. The leadership training was composed of lectures that dealt with five major subjects (female leadership and vision, self-esteem, creativity, communication, and time management), a special lecture from a local female leader and a cultural exchange program led by Sookmyung Women University students.
Especially, the special lecture given by the local female leader received a huge applaud by the local students. The Laos Minister of Education, H.E. Sengdeuane Larchanthaboune, Asian Director Ms. Vannapha Phommathansy of the Laos Ufficio Postale, Secretary General H.E. Veasna Bunchhith of the Cambodian National Commission for Women, Vice-Minister H.E. Mom Thany of the Cambodian ministry of agriculture, and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Oum Ravy of the Royal Pnompenh University led the session. They shared their own stories and lectured about the refinements of a female leader, making the session a lot more relatable for the audience.
At request of the faculty and staff members, Laos Souphanouvong University held an exceptional two-day leadership workshop for teachers and received numerous requests regarding the expansion of the program. The University has stated that teachers are showing great interest in strengthening their capabilities, as it is difficult to provide leadership education in Laos. It also hopes to expand workshops for teachers in the future. 40 students with outstanding completion of on-site training (8 from each university) will be invited to Korea in December to participate in ICT and leadership enhancing workshops.
Meanwhile, the UNESCO-UNITWIN project is a UNESCO project aimed to strengthen long-term capabilities of institutions by sharing knowledge and exchanging research amongst higher education institutions around the world. Sookmyung Women’s University’s UNITWIN project is an international development cooperation project supported by the Ministry of Education. It focuses on cultivating female leaders and information and communication education under the theme of ‘Strengthening Female Capacity through ICT and Leadership Training’ and celebrates its 3rd anniversary this year.
Kim Myunghee, head of Asia Pacific Women's Information Network Center claimed, "Over the years, I have experienced a grow of interest in UNITWIN education amongst local universities and students. We will continue to supplement and expand the program so that we can further develop the students' potentiality in consideration to the importance of ICT skills and leadership which is highly emphasized in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution."
