Sookmyung Women's University collaborated with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to co-host the <2019Sookmyung WIC Hackedthon Powered by AWS> for 2 days from November 22 to 23.

Titled “The Way to Better Citizen's Life - Creating New Thinking, Good Technology, and Living Design,” the hackathon was based on the theme of “Cheongpa-dong Snowflakes’ Sustainable Life in Seoul.” It was participated by 150 people, a total of 32 teams.

The hackathon participants received three weeks of pre-training and team-specific coaching from early November, which started with team building. On the day of the event, participants at the convention site in the Nunggot Square Hall developed various ideas to improve the lives of citizens throughout the night. In the morning on the 23rd, teams came to the stage to present their ideas to the judges.

As a result, the Grand Prize (Sookmyung Women's University President's Award) was won by the Nightlight Team (밤빛팀), which presented a system that can contribute to controlling the noise from tourists. The system was designed to recognize noises and adjust the brightness of streetlights accordingly. The Runner-up Prize went to the Sprout Team (싹팀) (a platform for cheap distribution of products with a short shelf life), Gray IT Team (a memory delivery service for the elderly that can resolve depression), Perfect Match Team (찰떡궁합 ) (customized nutritional supplement service to prevent misuse of supplements), and Baptteri Team (밥때리 ) (an app that provides nutritional education for a day's meal).

Winners will receive benefits such as exemption from document screening when participating in the International Hackathon with Kyushu University in Japan, exemption from document screening for the AWS-based cloud computing training course, and project support through the Entrepreneurship Engagement Foundation. In addition, there are plans to hold a roundtable meeting for participating teams to provide a separate commercialization support at the Seoul Business Agency (SBA), which recently signed an agreement with Sookmyung Women's University.

WIC Hackathon, a representative engineering education program of Sookmyung Women's University, is also jointly participated by the participants of the PRIME Tech School (engineering program for non-majors) and the WINE (Women In Engineering) program (in-depth training program for majors). This year, we expanded the qualifications to other university students and graduate students, improved their level through pre-team building and education, and added post-development courses on sustainable ideas to apply students' educational results directly to society.

The Dean of Office of Education Innovation Jung-san Oh said, “This is an event that combines the Sookmyung Women's University’s educational innovation achievements through the capstone design, problem-solving-based classes, and academic-industry-related curriculum. We plan to expand the Sookmyung WIC Hackathon as a unique educational model that will apply the knowledge of students to the real society based on ‘entrepreneurial’ methods.”
