Sookmyung’s Junior ROTC Leadership Camp opened July 20th for three days as a part of the SM Plus program to activate a creative learning experience. Passion radiated from the faces of the selected students who rose above the 12:1 competition rate.

While 730 high school girls applied for the Sookmyung Junior ROTC Leadership Camp, the student quota was limited to 60. Those who beat the competition rate beamed with joy. Included in the camp program were special lectures, mentoring by the reserve officers training corps, and field experience. Yoon-mi Cho, a junior at Muhak Girls High School who wishes to become a female leader, showed her great satisfaction by saying, “The lecture was so impressive. I was touched by the expression-serving leadership.”

After special lectures and a workshop, there was time for mentoring from members of Polaris, the ambassador of school admission, and from the reserve officers training corps. Questions about admissions were most common, with a flood of questions being directed to the admissions officer on the screening process in particular. The mentors of Sookmyung answered each question from students, some of whom took notes while listening to the explanations.

Do-young Kim, a junior from Kyunghwa Girls High School in Daegu, said that her dream was to be a female soldier. She smiled as she explained that, “as soon as I found the information about Junior ROTC, I applied for it instantly. I came from Daegu to join in this program.” She added, “Now that I am a vice president in my class, I want to nurture leadership a bit more through the camp.”

The next day, participants were given a tour of the JSA and CIQ areas to inspire in them a sense of national security. Jin-ju Lee, a junior from Kimpo High School, said, “I thought only superficially about the problem between North and South Korea, but now I can sense the reality by seeing it with my own eyes. I came to feel the need of unification.” After the tour, a soccer game with ROTC was held at the Hyochang playground at 4:30 pm. High school girls couldn’t take their eyes off of ROTC as they did warm-ups before the game, and continued to exclaim over what they saw. Though it was hot, students were quick and full of vigor. The players played hard at their game and students cheered equally as hard.

On the last day, the release ceremony took place at the Han Sang Eun Lounge in the Centennial Hall at 2pm. A certificate in the name of Sookmyung’s president was given to participants and some students were rewarded for excellent leadership. Jin-hyung Kim, a junior from Incheon Seoun High School, was presented with the Implementation Leadership Prize; Ji-su Sin, a junior from Kwangyang Baekun High School, was presented with the Servant Leadership Prize; and Woo-jeong Lee, a junior from Kyunggi Pyungchon High School, was given the Trust Leadership Prize. Woo-jeong Lee said she would miss the camp, saying that “the 3 days and 2 nights flew by fast. I hope to keep in touch with friends and see them again after entering university.”

The general manager of this camp and president of Sookmyung Global Leadership Institute, Eun-jin Park, concluded the event by mentioning, “I hope this camp becomes a base for the foundation of students’ visions and their nourishment for life. We’ll definitely see you again later on campus.” While the girls were full of smiles throughout the three-day program, a serious focus on future dreams was also evident on their youthful faces. It was with beauty and grace that they took their first steps toward their future dreams.
