Sookmyung was selected as the top university in the 2011 evaluation of education welfare and assistance for handicapped students, run by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. Sookmyung took the top rank among 331 universities in Korea with high marks on factors such as teaching and learning, equipping facilities for the disabled and on the composite index of evaluation. This survey is carried out every 3 years on a regular basis, and found Sookmyung to be the best in the last 2008 evaluation as well.

The 2011 evaluation of education welfare and support for disabled students was done by a self-evaluation committee composed of Sookmyung faculty members and a working group centered by Hyunsook Kim, the dean of students. Sookmyung has been providing differentiated welfare services for the disabled, different from any other university, by operating wellness programs for education, welfare, facilities and so on in behalf of handicapped students since May, 2010 when the Center for Students with Disabilities was opened.

Sookmyung’s Center for Students with Disabilities has worked for the improvement of welfare of students with disabilities by running health education programs, inviting outside specialists and providing the chance for students both with and without disabilities to watch a musical performance together.

The head officer of the Center for Students with Disabilities said “we have worked continuously for the practical welfare of education, the right to learn, the expansion of facilities, and so on since we started seeing steady numbers of students with disabilities.” He further added, “Students with disabilities can have all their needs met at one spot, namely, in the Center for Students with Disabilities, opened in the Renaissance Plaza in March of last year.
