The Institute’s director, Dr. Kyung Ock Chun(Department of Political Science), Amnesty International’s Dr. Nicole Bieske (Monash University), Dr. Wai-man Lam (Hong Kong University), Dr. Donald Rickerd (York University), Dr. Neil A. Englehart (Bowling Green State University), Dr. Kyung Hee Moon (Changwon University), other experts on NGOs and human rights, and students interested in human rights attended the symposium. This event was prepared to host a lively debate on the multicultural evolution of the world and the human rights issues that develop in these multicultural societies.

Many debates were held on the specific cases that were presented by our esteemed guests. The current and future role of international human rights NGOs was discussed by scholars from all over the world. Our very own Dr. Chun started off the 1st session with a discussion on ‘the role of international human rights NGOs and democratic governance.’ Discussions on ‘the responsibilities of NGOs, an evaluation on the role of Hong Kong’s international human rights NGOs’, and ‘the role of international human rights NGOs in multicultural societies’ soon followed. During the 2nd session, under the topic, ‘the challenges and opportunities for international NGOs’, there was a presentation on ‘Strengthening capabilities for international women’s NGO and Korean marriage immigrants.’

At the following Q&A session the students showed a keen interest in the topic as they posed questions to our guests. Ms. Na Yeon Kim, a political science major at this university, remarked, “It was an instructive experience, in which I was able to ponder domestic and foreign NGO activities and the human rights conditions in other countries.”

Dr. Chun, who hosted the symposium, stated, “It is time to think about what we expect of human rights NGOs and what we must do,” “To meet these demands I organized an event, where we could share a variety of insights on human rights NGOs.
