Sookmyung SIWA Volunteers’ First Visit in Australia

SIWA Volunteers Abroad who had been dedicated in Korean culture information activities for overseas Korean adoptees visited Australia during the winter vocation last for volunteer service. They successfully completed volunteer service in Australia for ten days from Feb. 17 last during winter vocation and came back. The volunteers are the members of leadership group under department of social welfare who have attended “Korean Culture Camp for Korean Adoptees” in New York for seven years from 2004 taking the lead in introducing Korean culture to the world. Last winter they were dispatched to Australia for the first time for the same intention of activities. SIWA consisted of 11 members including 9 people who had been the members of 5th, 6th and 7th SIWA volunteers. They offered Korean culture experience event for about 80 Korean adoptees and overseas Korean at Newcastle and Sydney in Australia. The event includes the programs of introducing Korea, Korean culture and traditional Korean games such as playing Yut and Jegichagi, and “Korea Today” that plays movies showing the looks of Korea today. The activities such as making holiday food like Songpyeon, wearing Hanbok (Korean traditional clothes) and learning fan dance had also achieved popularity. Through those activities, the volunteers had a valued time with Korean adoptees and their families. Jeong Ho Jo head of department of social welfare said: “We are planned to promote various volunteer programs to make warm volunteer service of Sookmyung people to reach every corner of the world than only in Australia.”
