Students of Sookmyung visited Senegal and Vietnam last winter vacation, attending lectures at local universities there and meeting local students to learn about their culture.

This student exchange program was governed by the Korean Cultural Institute of Sookmyung for the purpose of promoting balanced cultural exchange between Sookmyung and other overseas universities. Unlike before when students visited other countries primarily to represent Korean culture, this program sees students traveling abroad to learn from other cultures by listening to lectures on politics, economics, culture and general knowledge in the countries to which they are sent.

Students visited the Institute Superieur de Management in Senegal and Hanoi University in Vietnam where they attended classes and received credits. Outside the classroom, they participated in cultural experiences, exchange activities and volunteer work with local students so as to experience the local culture.

Ye-jee Kim (Division of Child Welfare & Studies, 09) commented on her feelings: “Although I thought Africa was very far from us, I could experience African culture and learn about it. It was a meaningful time for me.” The director of the Korean Cultural Institute, Min-ho Anh, mentioned that “it is a basic qualification for students to understand the cultures and societies of other countries in our global society and we arranged this program to provide students with the opportunity to see, experience, and learn Asian and African cultures by themselves.”
