The results of the 2012 Asia University Rankings survey, conducted jointly by QS, Britain’s authoritative organization for university evaluation, and the Cho-sun Ilbo, were released. In the 2012 survey, Sookmyung ranked 24th among medium-sized universities (with less than 12,000 students registered) having no medical school.

Since medical school usually produces more theses and has a larger faculty than other colleges, the separate evaluation title of “medium-sized universities having no medical school” has been distinguished since 2010 in order to prevent a distorted evaluation. One indicator, the paper quotation frequency, rose at Sookmyung from a rank of 14th (78.8 score) last year to 10th (85.1 score) this year. Other general indicators have also risen, moving Sookmyung up in ranking.

Sookmyung also ranked 14th in graduate reputation rankings among domestic universities. Rank in graduation reputation rankings is evaluated by asking 5291 personnel managers of global companies to select a university producing capable employees.

This year’s survey showed Sookmyung made marked improvement in the area of globalization. The indicator showing competiveness of globalization, the rate of exchange students coming from overseas universities, put Sookmyung 19th in Asia rankings and 8th in domestic status. This result is no doubt due to Sookmyung’s having sent admissions officers to Africa and other countries in Asia to select and recruit excellent foreign students.

The Cho-sun Ilbo-QS Asia University Rankings is the sole university evaluation for organizations of higher education in Asia, and this year it surveyed 461 universities from 15 countries in Asia, including domestic universities in Korea.
