Relics of Royal Family during the Greater Korean Empire period were donated to Sookmyung Women’s University again after a relic of the same period was donated last 2008. The donation is particularly significant to Sookmyung Women’s University because the relic is invaluable historical materials of the royal family which founded Myungshin Girl’s School, the precursor of Sookmyung Women’s University.

The donation ceremony of relics was held in the video conferencing room of the Administrative Building on the sixth of May. Giljin Cha, Head of Hooam Future Research Center, donated three photos of the royal family and a Portable Folding Taegeukgi, the national flag of Korea, used during the March First Independence Movement. The three photos consist of the portraits of Emperor Gojong and his consort Empress Sunheon; Emperor Sunjong and his consort Empress Sunjonghyo; and Crown Prince Youngchin and Lady Bangja Lee. Each photo bears the royal emblem of plum blossom. The relics were given to Mr. Cha by a person who wanted to stay anonymous in an event called “Kumyungsisik, in which Mr. Cha had been praying for the souls of deceased ancestors.

Sookmyung has received relics of the royal family again after it got the first donation of the relic of the last Crown Prince Youngchin.

Mr. Cha said, “the flag actually used in Pyeongtake during the March First Independence Movement. The flag which can be easily hidden by just folding it enables us to imagine the desperate situation in which our ancestors organized and inaugurated the Manse Demonstrations (Hurrah for Korean Independence Day) to avoid censoring of Japan.”

He donated Taegeukgi with the photos of the royal family during the Greater Korean Empire period to bring attention to the period.

The relics donated this time will be exhibited with the other relic of the Crown Prince Youngchin in the Permanent Exhibit Hall of Sookmyung Women''''s University Museum.
