Courses of our school are going to be shared with the public via the internet. By providing the public with ‘Creative Knowledge of Our Time’ and ’Human Knowledge of Our Time,’ the two new open liberal arts subjects for the fall semester of this year, our school began operating ‘Sookmyung Open Class.’ The number of courses available through ‘Sookmyung Open Class’ is going to increase.

‘Sookmyung Open Class’(http://ocw.sookmyung.ac.kr/) is the first Korean movement to share college-level education with the public which adopts the OpenCourseWare(OCW) features in America. The OCW is the program to share course materials created by universities via the internet without any charge. Since the MIT OCW program whose purpose was ‘spreading and sharing knowledge’ was started in 2002, the OCW movement and idea have spread to more than 250 different universities including Yale University, Cornell University, Carnegie Mellon University, UC Berkeley and so on.

Likewise, a great number of courses at numerous universities are already shared with the public through the OCW in America unlike in Korea. The movement is still in its infancy in Korea, and that makes the effort of Sookmyung Women’s University’s Open Class very important. Unlike many schools that translate other foreign schools’ courses and deliver them, ‘Sookmyung Open Class’ offer actual courses at Sookmyung Women’s University containing realistic and practical cases which suit our society. Therefore, the audience of our courses would be more likely to understand the content. This is a merit of our open class system.

‘Open Class’ has been arranged as a part of the college education reinforcement project by .the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology in South Korea. If they continue to select our school as one of the beneficiaries to receive financial support from the government next year, it is expected that our school will be fully equipped with the OpenCourseWare(OCW) system.

and < Human Knowledge of Our Time >, the new courses for the fall semester of 2009, are currently accessible through the open class system. Special lectures by leaders in the field of arts and humanities and the field of social sciences are going to be uploaded continually after two weeks of the open day. A Korean classical musician Byeong-ki Hwang, Dr. Jeong-il Do, Emeritus Professor at Kyunghee University, Professor Jang-jip Choi at Korea University, and novelist Hoon kim are going to provide courses one after another.
