A Sookmyung Student Wins the Best Award in the Debate Competition on National Security

The eighth Debate Competition on National Security held under the auspices of the Korean Army headquarters, and organized by Sookmyung Women's University (SMU) and Korea Military Academy (KMA) proceeded for two days last 30 and 31 October. We turned out the best award winner for the second consecutive year and other winners in three different debate sections.


Three hundred and eighty students from 40 universities passionately participated in the Debate Competition on National Security which is carried out as part of Ground Force Festival 2009. The competition was divided into 6 sections according to topics such as 'The plans to strengthen the military cooperation between Korea and America after the wartime command shift,' and 'The practical operation plans for national security through private military companies on commission.'

 

Youngeun Na, a sophomore political science student of SMU, won the best award in the sixth section of the competition with the topic 'The Russo-Japanese War's lesson and its implications today. 'Eunhye Cho and Eunbin Lee, junior political science students, respectively received awards as well in the fifth section of the competition with the topic 'Security cooperation between Korea and Japan and its prospect' and the second section of the competition with the topic, 'The lesson and problems of Afghanistan reconstruction.'

 

 

Meanwhile, student participants and the officials from Sookmyung Women's University and Korean Military Academy, the co-organizers of this debate competition, attended the opening ceremony. President Youngsil Han visited Executive Director Brigadier General Yu Kisub of KMA prior to the ceremony in the early morning and made a keynote speech at the ceremony. "Military cadets and college students are going to put their heads together to collect wisdom and to understand each other at the debate, and they will have a chance to be equipped with a broad and long-term view towards national security through the debate competition as well," President Han emphasized the significant meaning of the competition in her speech.
