In Chosun Ilbo`s intervew to celebrate the first anniversary of her assumption as a president, she stated that Sookmyung Women’s University(SMU) intends to get the reputation of well teaching university through its top quality education as she believes that the mission of the university is educating students and supporting them to work in the field rather than selecting extraordinary students.

“Erection of global campus in which students can take courses of renowned professors in Stanford University and Harvard University”

Next year 40 percents of students of the fixed number for admission will be selected through the Screening of Admissions Office.

Sookmyung Women’s University will be the university which offers students the greatest progress.

In her interview with us on the 1st of last month, she stated that Sookmyung Women’s University intends to get the reputation of well teaching university through its top quality education as she believes that the mission of universities is educating students and supporting them to work in the field rather than selecting extraordinary students.

Moreover she mentioned that ‘outward globalization (globalization from Korea to the world)’ is what she pursues rather than ‘inward globalization (globalization from the world to Korea).’ President Han Young Sil, who studies English through her Apple iPod(MP3 player) when she commutes, also announced that she would erect the global campus in which students can improve English skills without going abroad.

What is the vision to lead SMU?
“Professors devoting themselves to study are important. However, SMU focuses more on educating students. We offer the professors with effective teaching skills incentives to specialize and vitalize our university.”

- Since inauguration, you have strived to globalize campus…
“Korean universities tend to think globalization is sending students to other countries through exchange programs. However, the genuine globalization I believe is letting the world know ours by sending our students. It should be interactive globalization.”

What exactly do you want to inform the world of?
The globalization code of SMU is ‘informing the world of Korean cultures.’ In SMU, the cultural infra for information of Korea is abundant. Korean Food Research Center, gayakeum Orchestra (gayakeum: a twelve-stringed Korean harp), and Korean Art on campus are the examples. We will put them together to communicate with the world. In line with it, SMU established Korean Cultural Institute last April.

What else are you planning for globalization?
Sookmyung Women’s Univesity is developing ‘SNOW 2.0(Sookmyung Network for Open World),’ the website which allows students to download renowned professors’ courses in Stanford University and Harvard University. Sookmyung students are going to take classes which are taught in other countries in Sookmyung Women’s University.

- Your visit in schools in the countryside attracted public attention…
This year, Sookmyung Women’s University is going to select 22 percents of students (554 students) of the fixed number for admission through the Screening of Admissions Office and 234 students of them will be selected via ‘Screening of Regional Talents.’ The screening is to excavate the hidden jewels of country schools which have potentials to be outstanding even though their grades are not good enough at the moment.

- How are you going to operate the Screenings of Admissions Office System?
In 2011, the year juniors of high school become seniors, 40 percents of students of the fixed number for admission will be selected through the Screening of Admissions Office. In 2013, the year seniors of middle school become seniors of high school, the number of students who will be selected through the screening will be expanded to 60 percents. Students who express themselves as they are will get higher grades rather than the ones who emphasize their showy prizes or portfolios.
