Sookmyung awarded an Honorary Doctoral Degree to President of the Republic of Senegal Abdoulaye Wade

Abdoulaye Wade was acknowledged for his political policies concerning women’s right, gender equality, and ‘low-carbon and green growth,’ and received the honorary doctoral degree at the Samsung Convention Center in the Sookmyung Centennial Building on November 23.

The degree conferment ceremony was graced by the presence of 150 people from various foreign embassies including the Senegal embassy. Congratulatory address by Christoph Kuweii Dambo, the ambassador of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and a congratulatory performance by Sookmyung Gayageum Orchestra were followed by the ceremony.

President Abdoulaye Wade was born in 1926 in Kebemer, Senegal and was a former professor of Law and Economics at the University of Dakar. In 1974 he retired from his position as President at the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and created the Senegalese Democratic Party. Since then, He has leaded the party.

As the longtime leader of the main Opposition party, Abdoulaye Wade won the presidential elections in 2000 ending forty years of rule by the Socialist Party. He is highly credited with his efforts to construct democracy in the nation, achieve energy independence, support farms and fishing villages, and promote social overhead capital development.

Meanwhile, Sookmyung Women’s University agreed to encourage and promote academic cooperation and exchange programs with University of Gaston Berger in Senegal. President Youngshil Han of our school and President Mary Teuw NIANE of University of Gaston Berger promised to implement student and faculty exchange programs, collaborative research projects and symposiums through a cooperation agreement. Sookmyung University and University of Gaston Berger also laid foundation to enhance bilateral cultural exchanges between South Korea and Africa. Through the cooperation agreement, Sookmyung’s 100-year-old traditional education form women will encourage Senegalese women to participate in society for development of their society and politics.
