The ‘Sun and Moon Festival’ was held on May 5th  at the Yongmun Traditional Market, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, hosted by Sookmyung Women’s University’s Campus Town Enterprise Organization and the Merchant Association. With ‘Let’s visit the Traditional Market to celebrate Children’s Day!’ as the main theme the festival included activities such as puppet plays, making rice cakes, face painting, and taking souvenir photos all under the main concept of the traditional story, ‘The Sun and the Moon’.

Children who visited the market with their parents were able to make unforgettable memories while participating in various activities designed by the students of the Human Resources Department of Sookmyung Women’s University. A child who participated in making rice cakes with her mother  stated in an interview that she wanted to revisit the festival for more face painting and puppet plays.

The festival was held to revitalize the Youngmun Traditional Market by the Seoul City and Sookmyung's Campus Town Enterprise Organization. Among the students taking the ‘Creative Redevelopment Workshop’ class, which opened in the first semester, the ‘Yongmun Inside Team’ cooperated with the Merchant Association and successfully launch the festival. Besides the ‘Sun and Moon Festival’, they also held the ‘Yongmun Playground Project’ on May 4th as an on-site economic education program where local children visited Yongmun market to experience selling and buying  goods for Parent’s day.

Ban Jae Sun, the president of Yongmun Traditional Market Trader Association said, “It was the first time many mothers came with their strollers like today. At first I was very doubtful, but sellers are improving their stores and enthusiastically offering market goods after learning from the students’ great ideas.” The Campus Town Enterprise Organization official stated, “Through such a project, we hope to diversify the customer base in the traditional market and build up the identity of the market to revitalize the local commercial area in the long term.”

Meanwhile, Sookmyung’s campus organization is also carrying out projects like revitalizing youth start-up businesses and specializing Yongsan culture. To activate these plans, diverse capstone design projects and extracurricular activities are being implemented to establish a leading model in the coexisting local community. The following are the plans to develop Yongmun Market into a national representative market in the long run: Offering eight capstone designs and area-related courses in the first semester of this year, operating Yongmun Merchant University that teaches Chinese, SNS and application usage for merchants, holding open contests and using vacant stores for student start-up business, recruiting Yongmun Traditional Market marketing supporters, and advocating promotion activities for traditional market specialization.

The Campus Town organization officials claimed, “By sharing university resources with the local society and actively utilizing them, an ideal coexisting model will be made which cultivates talented young people and activates the local community.”
