Our university’s The Research Institute of Asian Women (President So-jin Park) held an international conference on the theme of “Korean Wave, Gender and Trans-cultural Community” at the Centennial Hall’s Shinhan Bank Hall, among other locations, on November 7.

The conference, which was divided into four parts, kicked off with the opening remarks of President So-jin Park. Presided by The Research Institute of Asian Women’s Head Research Professor Mi-yeong Jang, the 1st part, which consisted of the keynote lecture by Seoul National University Professor Seok-Gyeong Hong on “The gender issue presented by the Korean Wave” and the keynote speech by the Seoul National University Professor Won-ho Jang on “The study on the Korean Wave and trans-cultural community,” introduced the main topics of the conference.

Afterwards, the 2nd and 3rd parts were divided into two sessions: presentations on “K-Pop and Gender Representation” and “K-Contents, Desire and Representation.” Overall discussions were carried out during the 4th part with the Sungshin Women's University’s Professor Du-bo Shim at the top of the table, and diverse discussions were held well over the scheduled one hour, rivaling the passion shown during the presentations.

The conference was able to find academic significance in that it explored the direction of sustainable development of the Korean Wave from the perspective of gender by expanding the Korean-led research on the industrial values of the Korean Wave. The conference’s role in providing cultural exchanges was also meaningful as the meaning of the Korean Wave was shared with scholars from Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei, and more.
