From October 14th (Thu) to October 20th (Wed), the president of Sookmyung Women’s University, Yunkeum Chang, went on a business trip to California, USA to visit the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Southern California. Thus, a full-fledged step toward globalization of the university began by successfully ending discussions to revitalize student and professor exchanges.

■ Sookmyung-Berkeley Honors Program to open with UC Berkeley

On October 14 (Thu), President Chang visited UC Berkeley, a sister university, and met with President Carol Christ, who was appointed as the first female president of UC Berkeley in 149 years in 2022. President Chang invited her to the “Global Women's Global Leadership Symposium (tentative title)” held at Sookmyung Women’s University in 2007.

On behalf of the East and the West, the two presidents agreed to form a network of female presidents, hold regular forums, and work closely together to form a global council of female presidents.

In addition, to expand student exchanges between the two schools, the Sookmyung-Berkeley Honors Program and the summer internship program were discussed. Lisa Alvarez-Cohen, Dean of Academic Affairs, who attended the interview, introduced the growing interest of UC Berkeley in Korea and hoped to expand student exchanges with Sookmyung Women’s University.

In addition, they shared opinions on various ways to expand cooperation, such as the development and research of joint research projects related to women and tech, and exchange of visiting professors between the Sookmyung Women’s University’s The Asia Pacific Women's Information Network Center and Berkeley’s Institute of East Asian Studies.

■ To expand the international exchange program between the University of Southern California and departments.

On the other hand, on October 18 (Mon), Dean Ki-eun Jung of International Affairs and Associate Dean Jang-ho Moon of the External Affairs and Communication visited our sister university, the University of Southern California (USC), and met Vassilios Papadopoulos, Dean of the College of Pharmacy, and Anthony Bailey, Vice President of Strategic and Global Initiatives, to check on the current status of exchanges in international exchange programs between pharmacy schools. The two universities agreed to expand cooperation in international exchange programs between departments in the future, such as public relations and media.

President Chang's business trip to the United States served as an opportunity to revitalize exchanges with overseas universities that have been stagnant due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, it is expected that it will lead to strengthening the global competitiveness of Sookmyung Women’s University through concrete implementation of the agreed upon matters.
