Sookmyung Women's University (SMU) begins the Sookmyung Network for Open World (SNOW). It is a service which opens a knowledgeable platform, through which sharing the World's renowned scholars lectures is possible in Korean. The SNOW service offers internet users the place in which they can study and share global knowledge with easy access.

We embarked on a new project to develop the SNOW service system last May when we found that students' recognition on knowledge sharing and access to it were still low even though a great number of useful courses from the world’s finest universities are accessible on the internet and it is becoming more popular through openings on the web.

Currently, the available lectures on the SNOW website are Creative Commons (CC)licensed, and students can freely study the copyrighted work of world famous universities and organizations at no charge. We now obtained permission to distribute the lectures with Korean subtitles on the SNOW website. Through it the more desirable SNOW open knowledge platform with high quality has been constructed for everyone on the website.

As a result, the database containing great scholars'1000 regular courses and special lectures with explanations in Korean was first built in Korea. The SNOW platform is a participatory system in which users can make comments and debate, and it is a very developed system which has lecture indexes in Korean as well.

Snow is not only expected to suggest a knowledgeable ecosystem model that students and other learners spontaneously grow inside, but it is also expected to spread universities' contribution activities throughout society.

The SNOW Beta version released this time went public on the first of December on its homepage at (http://www.snow.or.kr). Anyone including Sookmyung students can freely access its database. We are going to formally open SNOW after refining its current weaknesses detected during the trial period,

Meanwhile, we are selecting students as "SNOW Knowledge Leaders" based on 44 majors and 25 knowledge criteria of SNOW's contents. SNOW Knowledge Leaders' tasks are finding content which is related to their majors and creating Korean explanations about them. Also, they will screen and edit raw informational content. In addition, the Sookmyung Volunteer Translator group will translate English lectures into Korean under the 'Open Translation Project' and 'ItsU,' Sookmyung's IT leadership group, will improve the SNOW website.

Sookmyung University was the first to receive TEDX, the local event official license, among other universities in the country, and is planning to hold the TEDxSookmyung event biweekly to offer college students a chance to share their ideas.
