On the March 6th, YL TESOL, a volunteer club composed of TESOL students and teachers, had its unveiling for a third term. Their efforts to realize their goal to share high-quality English education with the children from low-income families who can hardly afford it has yielded substantial outcomes.

Sookmyung Graduate School of TESOL started volunteer services for the locals in late 2008. Considering the fact that the need for quality English education was more in need, they planned a project for local children who were left out from high-quality English education owing to their family circumstances. Students who had taken "YL-TESOL," one of courses training professional English teachers for young learners at Sookmyung Graduate School of TESOL, formed a volunteer club named “YL TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages for Young Learners)” and participated in various volunteer activities. They say they not only volunteered but also got the real field experience of teaching students.

The first volunteer activity was done for kindergarteners in the locals. Children who hardly got opportunities of getting English education or never neared private institutions to learn English attended the free lesson by YL TESOL. Since then, YL TESOL have regularly visited Cheongpa Nursery, Sagwanamoo Study Room, Yonsei Gayang Welfare Center, and other facilities in Yongsan to offer them quality English education in various ways such as private English tutoring and storytelling, and so forth.

The club has sent the total sixty number of volunteers including twenty four new comers of this semester since the spring semester of 2009. They all said their heart seemed to be filled with pride by contributing to improving the English abilities of students at civil society organizations in the local community for twelve to fifteen weeks every semester.

Students and graduates of YL-TESOL are always welcome to join the volunteer club. Namjoon Kang, the head professor of YL-TESOL, clarified, “we aim for having every student of YL-TESOL participate in the club as we are planning to have more beneficiaries of our education services in the local community.”
