Sookmyung Women''s University students volunteered abroad in Vietnam for two weeks last January. They obtained valuable experiences by teaching arts and physical education to local children who were either from lower class families or who were handicapped.

The winter volunteer abroad program in Vietnam was run by the Office of Social Services of Sookmyung Women''s University as part of its volunteer abroad project. Jeongho Cho, the head officer of the Office of Social Services and professor of Physical Education, led the group of 15 Sookmyung students to Vietnam. The students participated in volunteering for about 100 children. The volunteer work started on 13 January and ended 27 January.

They focused on artistic training. The volunteers exercised musical training by using rhythmic instruments such as ''Sogo,'' a Korean traditional musical instrument, and art training by having origami sessions and painting classes. Sports activities such as ball games were also provided. Teaching Korean traditional ''Fan Dance'' and game ''Yut,'' the volunteers worked as a cultural mission as well.

Moreover, students paid a visit to the Leper Hospital run by the Vietnamese government. The corps gave the patients gifts brought from Korea and enjoyed time together with them. The Office of Social Service said that they would like to design more volunteer abroad programs to give students more global experiences.
