SISS is an international summer school that provides exchanges by inviting faculty from overseas sister universities and creating local language lectures so that international students and our students can take the courses together. It is gaining a lot of popularity because the students can get credit for the summer session and have a chance to create a human network during a short period by taking courses with international students.

The program is conducted twice during each summer vacation, where SISS II is currently under progress after the successful finish of SISS I this year. SISS I that was held for 3 weeks from July 1 was participated by 46 university students from 18 universities and 9 different countries such as Taiwan, U.S., Viet Nam, U.K., and Australia.

Diverse majors and cultural classes were created by our school’s faculty such as music and media production technology (lsoda Hideki) and new solutions to new issues: design, technology, and engineering (Tod Hollowback) as well as classes created by overseas faculty such as professional leadership communication (Alberto Gonzalesz - Bowling Green State University), introduction to cultural administration (Patricia Villeneuve - Florida State University), language and psychology from the perspective of cognitive psychology (Jeon Hae-seong - University of Central Lancashire), and introduction to macroeconomics (Najip Khan - University of Ottawa).

The students participated in classes each day and Korean culture experiential events prepared by our university at the same time. They fully enjoyed the cultural attractions of Korea through Nanta (percussion) performance, Hanbok (Korean traditional dress) experience, DMZ tour, and Korean traditional fan crafting. SISS II program that began on August 1 is more oriented toward Korean cultural experience than major classes.

59 students from a total of 12 countries are participating in the program and they are taking Korean language and Tae Kwon Do classes in the morning and afternoon. The officials of our university’s International Cooperation Team said, “The program operation is focused on providing opportunities to learn about Korean culture and history as well as Sookmyung Women’s University for foreign exchange students and other students through the SISS program as a part of campus globalization. And our school’s students are provided with a chance to cultivate their global competencies through the program.”
