Sookmyung TESOL announces English education program at 'TESOL BEYOND' event

Through this event, Sookmyung TESOL newly revealed the integrated online-offline English teacher education service co-developed with top-rated international education organizations such as CENGAGE Learning, ETS and National Geographic Learning - 'SM-ELTeach.'

 

In addition, English education scholars including Professor Phil Hubbard of Stanford University were invited for special lectures and forums, English teachers from the Seoul and Gyeonggi areas made presentations, there was a Sookmyung TESOL briefing, and a book fair participated by the publishers Oxford and Cambridge was held. A total of 250 people attended the event, not only including Education Office personnel from Seoul and Gyeonggi and English education related figures like Doctor Bo-young Lee, but also various other people interested in English education.

Head Sookmyung TESOL Professor Kyung-sook Yum stressed in her congratulatory message, "Sookmyung TESOL opened a new age in education of English teachers in Korea 18 years ago, and now, it will open a new horizon in the field by leading the new technological age under the slogan 'TESOL BEYOND.'" She emphasized that llike the idea included in the word BEYOND, meaning it will 'go beyond borders,' Sookmyung TESOL will go beyond traditional teaching methodologies, overcome limits of the imagination, and create innovation in education of teachers that surpasses limitations of time and space.

 

SM-ELTeach is an integrated online-offline service developed to help English teachers adapt to the technological environment of the 21st century and develop the abilities to lead a digital class. It integrates the know-how of Sookmyung TESOL teacher education, and the excellent contents of EL-Teach, developed by international masters of the English education field, Donald Freeman, Anne Bruns and Anne Katz. Sookmyung TESOL not only aims to provide efficiency and convenience of online education through SM-ELTeach, but also excellent offline education quality, and to maximize learning effects through real time interaction between 'teachers-students' and 'students-teachers.'

Professor Phil Hubbard of Stanford University in the United States, who was a speaker at the forum with the theme, ‘Current Developments in Teacher Education,' defined the new role required from English teachers together with the changes in the English education field environment due to technological changes, and emphasized that teachers and students need to more than just accept the effects of the changing environment, but actively apply the changes. Professor Glenn Stockwell of Waseda University and Professor Levi McNeil of the Sookmyung Women's University Graduate School TESOL program followed, presenting specific cases of new technology that can be applied to the classroom and providing useful information to participants.

In addition, people shared their career/academic advancement/overseas study experiences after the TESOL program through the SMU/YL/PL-TESOL networking program at the event, which was well received by students, graduates and other people interested in related fields.
