On May 20th (Fri), Sookmyung Women’s University held a ceremony to commemorate the 116th anniversary of Sookmyung's founding at the Centennial Hall’s Samsung Convention Center.

In her commemorative speech, President Chang introduced the recent achievements in relation to “TThe World's Best Digital Humanities University,” Sookmyung’s 2030 vision announced last year. President Chang said, “We have succeeded in establishing a digital education platform in the midst of this age of great digital transformation such as the opening of the Digital Humanity Center, which will be the center of digital humanity convergence research and education, earlier this year and the consecutive selection for large projects such as the National Program of Excellence in Software (software-oriented university project) and the Leaders in Industry-university-research Cooperation (LINC 3.0). She also added, “We achieved the first place in the employment rate for women’s universities through employment-specialized programs such as SM Bridge mentoring, and completed facility improvements such as library remodeling and administrative building construction,” and promised to “continue to innovate the university toward global Sookmyung that leads the world and the realization of Sookmyung members’ dreams.”

Meanwhile, the Sookmyung Development Contribution Award, established for the first time this year, is an award given to senior alumni who practiced Sookmyung's founding spirit and raised the status and development of the university. Alumni Sang-eun Han, Bong-ae Jang, and Jemma Hwang became the first awardees.

 

Sang-eun Han is the wife of Chairman Sang-myun Bae, the founder of Kooksoondang Brewery, and served as chairman and advisor of Baesangmyun Brewing Research Institute. After graduating from the Department of Korean Language and Literature at Sookmyung Women's University in 1949, she donated a large amount of money for the development of the school and contributed to the harmony and development of the alumni.

 

Alumni Bong-ae Jang is the wife of Honorary Chairman Young-hwan Yoon, the founder of Daewoong Pharmaceutical, and currently serves as the honorary chairman of the Daewoong Foundation. After graduating from Sookmyung Women's University’s Department of Family Studies in 1957, she gave her full support for the development of her alma mater.

 

After graduating from Sookmyung Women's University’s Department of Family Studies in 1959, alumni Gemma Hwang moved to the United States to establish the Global Sookmyung Scholarship Foundation and supported various scholarship projects for her alma mater. Currently, the Yang Chun-Yeol Global Fund, named after Gemma Hwang's Korean name, is providing scholarships to international students from developing countries.

Alumni Bong-ae Jang attended the ceremony as the representative and was awarded the Sookmyung Development Contribution Award. Alumni Jang received applause from the attendees by revealing that she had donated 2 billion won to the development fund for the operation of the Digital Humanity Center. President Chang said, “Today was a day to thank the alumni who have made a great contribution to the development of the school and to spread the will of nurturing future students to the members,” and “we will do our best so that the alumni's love for their alma mater can continue in the future.”
