Our university holds HMBA invitational 'MGM Resort International Executive Lecture'

Through an invitation by our university's HMBA (Graduate School of Hospitality Management), Alan Feldman and Ed Bowers, who are the Senior Vice President and Vice President of MGM Resort respectively, gave a lecture with the theme 'Economic Effect of Integrated Resort and Social Safeguards', which became a great opportunity to acquire useful information for the people of Sookmyung who wish to enter into the hospitality industry.



MGM Resort International is a casino resort company headquartered in Paradise, Nevada. It is an extensive resort company that generates $9 billion in annual revenue worldwide and has the 2nd largest hotel chains after Caesar's Entertainment in the U.S. The company operates a total of 42 thousand rooms, 400 retail outlets within hotels and 350 restaurants & bars, creating jobs for 610 thousand employees and accommodating 60 million customers.



In the special lecture by Senior Vice President of MGM Resort, Alan Feldman, he introduced the secrets and history of the company by explaining how the MGM Group was able to diversify into an integrated exhibition & performance industry of conventions, entertainment, exhibitions, etc. in a short period of time from a company that used to heavily rely on gambling profits. When the microphone was passed to Vice President Ed Bowers, he explained pro bono activities of MGM. It mainly consisted of issues relating to casino which is the main source of income for integrated resorts such as education and reformation programs for preventing gambling addiction and adverse effects, scientific research and treatment development for pathological behavior due to gambling, eco-friendly policies of carbon emission reduction and increasing recycling, among others.



Soon as the lecture was over, a time of questions and answers was held with the students. The students asked specific and sensitive questions such as MGM Resort's entry into Korea and establishment of for-profit hospitals, and the speakers honestly answered their questions. The planners of the event, HMBA, said, "Through the special lecture on the economic effect of integrated resort industry and social safeguard, we think a good opportunity was created that introduced the vision and outlook of integrated resorts and contributed to future-oriented global career planning for the students."
