Sookmyung Institute for Multicultural Studies Receives Prime Minister Award for Social Integration

The Ministry of Justice revealed the reason for the award, "The institute has actively pursued various academic, research and education activities to improve understanding of a multicultural society and cultural diversity, and for social integration. Also, the fact that it has fulfilled its vocation as an institute that operates a Ministry of Justice ABT University and 4 branches of the social integration program was highly evaluated."

 

The Sookmyung Institute for Multicultural Studies was established in 2008 in step with the age of 1.5 million Koreans residing overseas, in order to reflect the focused attention on migration, immigration, cultural diversity and understanding, and social integration, and conduct related research. It has conducted various academic and policy research to improve social awareness of multiculture in general in Korean society, and for high quality multicultural education. It has especially established a close partnership with the Ministry of Justice, including measuring the social integration index and quotient of Koreans residing overseas and holding the Together Day forum.

In addition, the institute has steadily continued research activities, including hosting domestic and international seminars on various issues related to a multicultural society, and issuing Korean and English journals. Furthermore, it has led awareness of a multicultural society of university students and the general public internally and externally, and the creation of public opinion related to improved human rights through efforts such as human rights education and a related campaign for youth. Meanwhile, it has also improved expertise and awareness as a social integration education institute.

Based on such efforts, in 2008, it was selected as an ABT University, which is a major multicultural social integration foothold university selected by the Ministry of Justice. As an ABT University, it has been operating the multicultural social expert grade 2 lecturer training project for 6 years. In 2012, it was selected as an institute to operate 4 social integration program branches in Seoul, and was re-selected again this year.

 

Director Jo Sam-sub of the institute said, "We will endeavor to fulfill the role of a core research center of Sookmyung Women's University, including registering the current journal we publish as a National Research Foundation of Korea listed journal candidate and hosting various forums and academic conferences."
