Held “Women in Tech Day” Event for Fostering Creative Women IT Experts

With the growing emphasis on education which build software competency in light of the fourth industrial revolution, the collaboration between our university and a global company in the cloud industry, Amazon Web Services (hereinafter “AWS”), is receiving great attention.
Our university opened the “Women in Tech Day” event with AWS from November 1~3 on campus in order to foster creative women IT experts. The event was comprised of the “AWS Technical Essentials Day,” which introduced the next generation IT education programs, and the “Sookmyung-AWS Women in Tech Hackathon.”
The AWS Technical Essentials Day that was held on November 1 was participated by around 300 students of both genders. The event provided basic concepts of cloud computing, core utilization methods, and an opportunity for practical learning.
The Women in Tech Hackathon which followed for the next two days was participated by around 120 women college students, graduate students, and the general public from around the country. Based on the topic “Speak Yourself in Tech,” the participants contended each other’s ideas and the “Find My Seat” Team took the glory of the Minister of Science and ICT Award by presenting their notification system in relation to seats for pregnant women.
This application which notifies the location of seats for pregnant women allows the user to check for seats designated for pregnant women in real time, and by attaching a Bluetooth-like sensor on the seats, the system sounds a message when people other than pregnant women sit down. The team explained that the system enables heightened awareness on yielding seats designated for pregnant women and efficient operation of such practice.
The runner up award, Sookmyung Women's University President’s Award, went to the “Pictalk” Team which presented a software that provides communication assistance for the hearing-impaired based on deep learning. In addition, the AWS Korea Representative’s Award and the Korea Federation of Women’s Science & Technology Associations President’s Award went to the “Iamyou” Team, which presented an application that provides user reviews and hidden camera detection function when using bathrooms in a local area, and the “Petitfee” Team, which presented a service that enables the users to check available seats for pregnant women on subways by using sensors and fast transport information based on elevator usage, respectively.
President Jungai Kang said, “Although the well-educated IT professionals rose to the highest paid profession by surpassing the traditional professions such as doctors and lawyers, the awareness on IT industry is still relatively low in Korea,” and “I hope this event can become an opportunity for spreading awareness on IT education and the need to foster software human resources, as well as expanding the base of students advancing into the relevant areas.”
Meanwhile, our university entered an MOU with AWS and began the Women in Tech program in December of last year. “Women in Tech” is a program which provides support for acquiring expert knowledge, reinforcing competency, obtaining relevant certification with regards to cloud computing, which is a core technology for the 4th industrial revolution. It is expected to increase employment opportunities for students in a field which promises more and more social demands as well as largely contributing to the expansion of women IT human resources in Korea.
On the coming November 27, there are plans to open the “Sookmyung Women in Tech Forum” to search political alternatives for expanding IT human resources by inviting figures in charge of IT and women human resource development policies.
