As part of the “2021 Sookmyung Women’s University UNESCO-UNITWIN ICT and Leadership Education Program for Women Empowerment,” Asia Pacific Women’s Information Network Center (APWINC), a UNESCO chair organization at Sookmyung Women’s University, successfully concluded ICT and Leadership Online Education, which lasted three months from early August to early November, with joint universities in Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Cambodia.

The education team, consisting of Sookmyung Women’s University faculty and students, carried out ICT (Information Communication Technology) and Leadership Education program, targeting female students of joint universities at National University of Laos (located in Vientiane), Souphanouvong University (located in Luang Prabang), Quy Nhon University (located in Qui Nhon), Universitats Gadjah Mada (located in Yogyakarta), and Royal University of Phnom Penh (located in Pnompenh).

This education program contributed to the reinforcement of women capabilities and the development of human capital of ASEAN regions and universities, through several education courses ranging from Artificial Intelligence, data mining with Python, mobile application, design thinking and communication, women rights and leadership education, to entrepreneurial spirit and entrepreneurship education.

Due to the pandemic, the program was carried out in the form of blended learning, an on-line education method that combines video lectures and real-time lectures. Sookmyung Women’s University education team and students from joint universities made up for the limitations of non-face-to-face lectures by actively exchanging questions and answers. Especially, despite COVID-19 that interrupts effective education, students from five universities, which are National University of Laos, Souphanouvong University, Quy Nhon University, Universitats Gadjah Mada, Royal University of Phnom Penh, actively and enthusiastically participated in the program for a successful completion.

“Thanks to UNITWIN program, I could understand so much about women empowerment and this inspired me a lot,” said a student from Universitats Gadjah Mada, Indonesia, who participated in the program. "The program helped me realize that I can be a better leader and contribute to making the world a better place.”

Other students shared their impressions as well. “Online education is very valuable. Also, it was meaningful to share opinions through active networks with other participants and faculty members.”, “It was an opportunity to think about what a good education is. Also, it was a useful time in that I could learn about ICT technology, for which I didn't have many chances to experience. The overall courses were helpful”.

“During the UNESCO-UNITWIN ICT and Leadership Education Program for Women Empowerment, learners were given in-depth discussions and high-quality Q&A sessions through real-time lectures using flipped learning, which is an innovative education method in the post-COVID-19 era, after online platform lectures. As a result, students were able to strengthen their ability to carry out their own work,” remarked Jung-In Jo, the Executive Director of APWINC. "I am sure that this project will be a new opportunity to urge innovative online teaching methods and education of ASEAN Universities. Also, Sookmyung Women's University UNESCO-UNITWIN business will have a very important and positive impact on women empowerment and gender equality."

UNESCO-UNITWIN program is a project promoting knowledge sharing and cooperation among universities around the world to strengthen the capacity of institutions of higher education. Sookmyung Women’s University is conducting various activities by building networks with 16 universities in 9 countries under the theme of "ICT and Leadership Education Program for Women Empowerment."
