President Yunkeum Chang visits the U.S. to expand international exchange and global talent network

Sookmyung Women’s University President Yunkeum Chang returned from her August 16th to 20th trip in Washington, U.S., after attending an international academic conference and visiting major partner institutions. This business trip was accompanied by Yun-seon Song, Dean of Student Affairs and Jang-ho Moon, Associate Dean of the Office of External Affairs & Communication.

 

On the 16th (Tue), President Chang visited the residence of the governor of Maryland and had a meeting with Yumi Hogan, the wife of Governor Larry Hogan, as the first official agenda. Yumi ogan, the first Korean-American first lady in U.S. history, is known to have played a major role in the pro-Korean wave, such as the purchase of Korean diagnostic kits in the state of Maryland in the course of the spread of COVID-19 in 2020 and the establishment of a Koreatown within the state. President Chang met with Yumi Hogan and exchanged discussions about women's leadership and global exchanges. Yumi Hogan promised to give a special lecture to Sookmyung Women’s University on September 19th as a way of showing her appreciation for the visit.

On the 17th (Wed), In-kook Park, President of Sookmyung Educational Foundation, attended the conference at Chey Institute for Advanced Studies, which is being chaired by the head director. At this event, domestic and foreign scholars such as Young-Kee Kim, chair professor at the University of Chicago, who became Korea's first president of the American Physics Society, and Taek-hwan Hyun, chair professor at Seoul National University participated in the event and exchanged opinions on the preemptive understanding and impact of cutting-edge science and technology that will rule the world for the next 50 years.

 

President Chang also attended the 35th US Korea Conference, which was held from the 18th (Thu) to the 20th (Sat). The event, co-hosted by the Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association (KSEA), the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies (KOFST), and the Korea-U.S. Science Cooperation Center (KUSCO), was held under the theme of “The Role of Science and Technology in the Wake of the Pandemic”. About 1,000 science engineers, entrepreneurs, and policy makers from Korea and the United States gathered for academic discussions and active human exchanges on advanced science and technology research.

 


 

The event was attended by not only Korean scientists in the United States, but also figures from major universities and research organizations. Sookmyung Women’s University President Yunkeum Chang, Seoul National University President Se-jung Oh, Korea University President Jin Taek Chung, POSTECH President Moo Hwan Kim, Ajou University President Kee-choo Choi, and KENTECH President Euijoon Yoon attended the meeting to discuss the challenges facing universities and to create opportunities through cooperation between Korean and American universities. In particular, President Chang, who attended the conference as the only women’s university president and female president, drew attention from the society by introducing Sookmyung Women’s University's plan for nurturing science and engineering talents and various achievements.

 

Through this business trip, Sookmyung Women’s University has solidified the foundation for global Sookmyung to lead the world by actively diversifying international exchanges and building a global network for nurturing female scientific talents.
