Sookmyung Women’s University became the first Korean university to launch a ChatGPT-based AI chatbot on its homepage to provide services in foreign languages.

The university announced that it initiated the “AI Noonsong” chatbot service on April 29, utilizing ChatGPT as well as an independent conversation engine technology.

Taking its name from “Noonsong,” the school’s mascot, the AI service is a next-generation natural language chatbot that can provide information on the university website in various languages. When the user asks the chatbot a question in a given language such as Korean, English, Chinese, or Japanese, the service will translate its answer accordingly and offer an answer to the user.

Because the chatbot learns constantly updated data on the Korean website in real time, foreigners can conveniently acquire the necessary information without the need for operating a separate website in foreign languages.

The AI Noonsong also uses a Q&A method in natural language, unlike the keyword search or rule/menu methods of existing models. This allows students to familiarize themselves more with the service and obtain information by interacting with the service, which is almost the same as sharing a conversation.

For example, they can ask for a list of cafeterias on campus for breakfast or how to check in to class when they lose their phones, and the chatbot will reply in question-and-answer format.

To respond to hallucination—a phenomenon wherein generative AI creates false information and displays it as if real due to lack of information—the university programmed the chatbot to include the relevant sources and links to all answers. This feature allows the user to recheck the accurate information.

Meanwhile, the AI’s development was carried out by Mindlogic, a startup acknowledged for its technical caliber in persona chatbot areas. “The chatbot service asks and answers the user smoothly and naturally and it can freely change the subject, creating an atmosphere of a 24/7 phone call service. We expect non-Korean students’ data access to increase exponentially as the service provides the information of the university’s website in foreign languages at a level equal to the Korean version,” the Bureau of Digital Information Innovation stated.

After operations during this semester, user response from AI Noonsong will be monitored to improve possible issues. The range of provided data will also expand to transcend the limits of sourcing only the university’s main website and deliver a wider variety of information.
