Siyeon Moon, a professor of French Language and Culture, was elected as the 21st president of Sookmyung Women’s University (SMU).

Sookmyung School Foundation announced that the board of directors held a meeting, where they elected Professor Moon as the 21st president of the university on June 20. Professor Moon will start the term from September 2024 for four years.
At the second vote for the 21st presidential election on June 13 to 14, Moon ranked first and Yunkeum Chang, a professor of Library and Information Science, came in second. It was the second direct election in the history of SMU, following the 20th presidential election in 2020, where the faculty, employees, students, and alumni participated to choose the university president.
Moon has a bachelor’s degree in French Language and Literature (now called French Language and Culture) at SMU and holds a master’s and Ph.D degree from Sorbonne Nouvelle University.
After becoming a faculty member of the Department of French Language and Culture at SMU in 1997, Moon served as the director of SMU Library and the director of the Korean Cultural Institute. She also served as the president of the Association for the Study of French Culture and Arts (Association D'Etudes De La Culture Francaise Et Des Arts En France, AECAF) and is currently the president of the World Association for Hallyu Studies (WAHS).
When serving as the chief of the Korean Cultural Institute, she worked to strengthen Korea's global competitiveness by co-hosting the first Korea-France Cultural Policy Forum and the first Korea-Africa Culture and Arts Forum together with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. As the president of the WAHS, she organized the World Hallyu Congress both in Seoul and Paris, an event where 100 scholars of Hallyu Studies from all around the world are invited to establish an academic foundation for K-culture and Hallyu Studies.
Moon said after the election, “With a great sense of responsibility, I will strive hard to enhance the status of SMU as a prestigious global university,” and added, “I will successfully lead the school administration in harmony to ensure no one is left behind.”
