Senegal’s ISM Dakar students visit Sookmyung Women’s University

Graduate students from l’Institut Supérieur de Management (ISM) in Dakar, a business school in Senegal and one of Africa’s most esteemed universities, visited Sookmyung Women’s University for two weeks as part of the International Office’s short-term visit program, gaining hands-on experiences with various aspects of Korean culture.
Established in 1992 as Senegal’s first private institution of higher education, ISM has maintained an academic exchange partnership with Sookmyung Women’s University since 2011.
During their visit, from Tue, Oct. 22 to Thu, Nov. 7, around 20 ISM graduate students participated in a series of enriching activities aimed at deepening their understanding of Korea’s culture, economy, and society. This year’s program held special significance as one participant from ISM’s 2014 visit returned to Korea a decade later, now in the role of an accompanying coordinator.
Professors Ida Daussy, Park Jong-dal, and Jeon Ji-hye from the Department of French Language and Culture delivered specialized lectures in French, covering topics such as the Korean economy, the Korean Wave, and international diplomacy. In addition to lectures, students explored Korea’s cultural heritage by visiting key landmarks, including Hanok Village, Insa-dong, and Lotte World, and participated in a taekwondo lesson.
They also delved into Korea’s innovative mobile services industry with a visit to SK Telecom’s ICT complex T Factory. Upon completing the program, participants were awarded one academic credit at ISM.

At a meeting with Sookmyung President Moon Si-yeun on Nov. 4, students shared their impressions, stating, “Korea’s remarkable development, achieved solely through its human resources despite limited natural resources, is awe-inspiring,” and added, “Experiencing Korea’s advanced technological sector was incredibly insightful.” Another participant remarked, “Visiting a women’s university at a time of emphasizing women’s education and roles was truly an impactful moment.”
Sookmyung Dean of International Affairs Shin Dong-soon commented, “This program has served as a meaningful platform to enhance educational and cultural exchanges between Korea and Senegal. Sookmyung remains committed to fostering global educational networks and providing diverse cultural experiences through active collaboration with international universities.”
